Read in the local newspaper that most incidents of elder abuse are perpetuated by the victim's own family. Assisted Living is a needed alternative/support system to help people in Hawaii. We have one of the nation's highest if not the highest cost burdened households. We also have a higher than average % of age-burdened households.
It should be understood though, that depending on the availability of family support and level of care required, staying at home (home care and similar efforts of the Home for Life Task Force in Hawaii) is still less expensive than institutional care, in terms of gov't subsidies and overall costs.
Time it seems: a commodity none of us hold in abundance.
